Kurt Okraku, the president of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has promised to improve refereeing in the domestic competitions by introducing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.
Although VAR is utilized extensively in more than 100 countries, developed countries and high-earning contests are the main locations for its application.
But FIFA President Gianni Infantino hinted in 2023 that a less expensive version suited for developing nations like Ghana would exist, and Okraku appears dedicated to this strategy.
Okraku emphasized that in order to allay concerns and irregularities in officiating, the organization is committed to using VAR in the Ghana Premier League.
“We are going to introduce VAR into our football. Whatever we will do to introduce VAR into football, we will, as part of our overall strategy for improving refereeing starting from our GPL, we will. It’s coming,” he stated during the Meet the Press event on Friday, as reported by 3 Sports.
At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, during Ghana’s 2022 World Cup qualifying match versus Nigeria, VAR was used for the first time to overturn a penalty call.
In the previous season, Dreams FC’s knockout matches in the CAF Confederation Cup in Kumasi employed VAR.
