Black Satellites coach opens up on preparations ahead of 2025 U-20 AFCON tournament

Ghana’s Black Satellites’ head coach, Desmond Ofei, has provided insight into the team’s preparations for the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which will take place in Egypt.

The Black Satellites, who won four AFCON championships and one FIFA World Cup triumph in 2009, bring a significant legacy and high expectations to the North African nation.

Accompanying Senegal, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Central African Republic in a challenging Group C, Ghana will be put to the test right away.

Giving update about his outfit preparations for the tournament, Ofei said, “We started with a local talent identification programme that ran for about five weeks. We looked at a wide pool of players from domestic competitions. Then we went to Morocco for a three-nation tournament which gave us a clearer picture of our core squad. The next phase is all about tactical fine-tuning and strengthening team chemistry”

The top two teams from each group, plus the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.

The tournament is set to kick off on Sunday, April 27, 2025, and will conclude with the final on May 18, 2025.

The stakes are high. Not only is continental supremacy on the line, but the top four finishers will secure their ticket to the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile — a stage where Ghana has previously etched its name in history as the only African team to lift the trophy.
