Lionel Messi has once again sparked a familiar debate among football fans: was the younger version of the Argentine superstar better than the player we see today?

The conversation comes after another impressive four-goal performance from Messi, with supporters comparing the explosive attacker of his younger years to the more experienced and efficient version of the player he has become.

While both versions of Messi have produced extraordinary numbers and unforgettable moments, fans continue to disagree over which version was truly the most dangerous.

Young Messi vs experienced Messi

During his peak years at Barcelona, Messi was renowned for his explosive acceleration, close control and ability to dribble past several defenders. His performances between 2009 and 2012 were particularly remarkable.

During that period, he won the Ballon d'Or four consecutive times, establishing himself as the dominant individual player in world football. Young Messi could receive the ball deep, take on defenders and create chances seemingly out of nowhere. His ability to turn a simple possession into a dangerous attack made him one of the most difficult players for defenders to contain.

But the older Messi has developed a different style. Rather than relying as heavily on explosive bursts of pace, the Argentine has increasingly used his vision, positioning, passing and football intelligence to dictate games.

Older Messi has become more efficient

One of the biggest arguments in favour of the experienced Messi is his ability to remain decisive without necessarily dominating matches through constant dribbling. His game has evolved considerably with age.

Messi can now influence a match by dropping deeper, creating opportunities for teammates, delivering dangerous set pieces or waiting for the right moment to make the difference in the final third.

Despite being well beyond his physical prime, he has continued to produce impressive goals and assists. His recent four-goal haul has therefore given supporters another reason to discuss just how extraordinary his longevity has been.

The trophy argument

The debate becomes even more complicated when Messi's overall career achievements are considered.

The Argentine has won eight Ballon d'Or awards, two Copa América titles and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, alongside the numerous trophies he collected during his Barcelona career. For many supporters, those achievements strengthen the argument that the older Messi is the more complete version of the player.

Others, however, still prefer the young Barcelona star who seemed capable of taking on an entire defence by himself.

So, which Messi was better?

There may never be a definitive answer. Young Messi was explosive, unpredictable and almost impossible to stop one-on-one.

Older Messi is calmer, smarter and arguably more efficient with the ball. Both versions produced historic moments and helped define different stages of one of football's greatest careers.

The four-goal performance has simply reopened the conversation. If you had to choose one version of Lionel Messi for a single important match, which one are you taking, young Messi or experienced Messi?
