Paintsil gave LA Galaxy hope with his 40th minute goal but Romulo restored the Mexicans two-goal advantage after the break.
Carlos Garces scored on the hour mark to pull one back for LA Galaxy as their journey in the Champions Cup came to a crashing end.
Paintsil will now switch his attention to the MLS game against Houston Dynamo on Sunday.
