Ibrahim Sannie Daara, a former director of communications for the Ghana Football Association, thinks Caleb Yirenkyi would have profited more from joining Portuguese powerhouse Porto than from playing in the English Premier League.

Yirenkyi reportedly signed a club-record contract worth over 27 million euros with add-ons to join recently promoted Premier League team Coventry City from Danish team FC Nordsjaelland.

Although Sannie recognises Yirenkyi's talent, he thinks the midfielder could have chosen a different path by joining a reputable European team like Porto, where he would have had the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League and compete for big honours.

Porto and a few other European clubs were interested in Caleb Yirenkyi. Who would have participated in the Champions League? Sannie stated on TV3.

"It would have been much better for him to play in the league at a place like Porto, where you are assured of winning the FA Cup or the cup, and then play in the Champions League, where you get a bigger window to see you."

Sannie thinks that playing in the Champions League at a team like Porto may have eventually made it possible to join a larger Premier League team.

"If you want to play in the English Premier League, a bigger team will come," he continued.

The former GFA communications director also warned Ghanaian players against viewing a move to any Premier League club as automatic career progression.

“But the craze that we just want to play in the English Premier League for any team doesn't work well. It affects their career,” he said.

Yirenkyi has featured in both of Coventry City's Premier League matches this season since completing his move from FC Nordsjaelland.
