A late goal from eventual champions Royal Antwerp caused KRC Genk to forfeit the Belgian league title, which led Black Stars winger Joseph Painstil to have a disappointing season.

When Toby Alderweireld, a former defender for Tottenham Hotspur, scored in extra time to win the championship for the visiting team, Genk was just seconds away from recovering the trophy.

Toluwalase Emmanuel gave Genk the lead just before halftime. As a result of the Union Saint Gilloise and Club Brugge match’s favorable outcome, Genk briefly regained the league lead.

Antwerp, nevertheless,

drew even following the interval thanks to Gyrano Kerk.

Although Simon Adingra scored early in the second half to put Union Saint Gilloise on top, Bryan Heynen gave Genk the lead once again.

With three goals conceded starting in the 89th minute, Saint Gilloise crumbled and handed the championship to Genk.

But Alderweireld’s incredible goal in the dying seconds gave Royal Antwerp its first championship since 1957.
