FC AshantiGold head coach Karim Zito has advised Asante Kotoko coach Eric Tinkler to adapt to the playing conditions in Ghana rather than repeatedly raising concerns about the quality of pitches.


Tinkler, who was appointed ahead of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, recently expressed his frustration over the condition of some football pitches in the country.


His comments came after Asante Kotoko's 1-0 pre-season victory over Heart of Lions at the University of Ghana Stadium, where the state of the playing surface reportedly raised concerns.



Karim Zito tells Tinkler to adapt Speaking on Akoma FM, experienced Ghanaian coach Karim Zito said Tinkler should have been aware of the conditions in Ghana before accepting the responsibility of managing one of the country's biggest clubs.


Zito believes adapting to the environment is part of the challenge facing every coach who works in Ghanaian football.


“Eric Tinkler needs to adjust himself to the situation here in Ghana. He should have taken the time to come down and assess the conditions before accepting the Asante Kotoko job,” Zito said.


The veteran coach suggested that instead of focusing heavily on the condition of the pitches, Tinkler should find ways to help his team perform under the circumstances.


Zito points to Kotoko's recent success

Interestingly, Zito also pointed out that the same playing conditions Tinkler has criticised have not prevented Asante Kotoko from winning silverware.


The Porcupine Warriors recently defeated rivals Hearts of Oak to win the Democracy Cup, giving Tinkler his first trophy since taking charge of the club.


According to Zito, that achievement should encourage the South African coach to focus more on adapting to the environment.


“The same poor pitches he has been complaining about have given him a trophy, despite all the negativity surrounding the situation,” he added. 


Zito praises Tinkler's passionate celebration

Despite disagreeing with Tinkler's comments about Ghana's pitches, Zito revealed that he was happy to see the Kotoko coach celebrating his first trophy with the club.


The veteran coach said Tinkler's reaction reminded him of his own celebrations after winning a cup during his coaching career.


“I was happy for Tinkler yesterday. I remember when I won a cup, I also danced, so when I saw him celebrating, I saw a bit of myself in him. I was genuinely happy for him,” Zito said.


Kotoko prepare for new Ghana Premier League season

With the Democracy Cup now secured, Tinkler and his players will turn their attention to the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League.


Asante Kotoko are scheduled to begin their league campaign away from home against Debibi United, with the club hoping to build on their early success under their new coach.


For Tinkler, the challenge will now be to adapt to Ghanaian football, manage the conditions available and guide Kotoko through what promises to be a demanding Premier League campaign.
