Edem Agbana, a member of parliament from Ketu North and the president of Nukunu Sports Academy, has expressed worry about the low pay received by some Ghana Premier League players, stating that he recently met a player who was paid as little as GHS300.

In an interview with Sporty FM prior to the commencement of the 2026–2027 Ghana Premier League season, Agbana stated that players' financial difficulties are a reflection of larger issues that impact teams all around the nation.

"I met a Ghana Premier League player who told me he's been paid GHS300," Agbana stated.

Although he acknowledged that some football players in Ghana's top division make less than GHS1,000, he maintained that club owners shouldn't be held solely responsible.


Agbana, who also owns Nukunu Sports Academy, stated, "There are players who earn less than GHS1,000. But who do you blame? You can't blame the team owners." He added, "As a team owner, I look at the investment going in, but there is low patronage, and the facilities are not there."


His remarks coincide with clubs getting ready for the upcoming Ghana Premier League season, which is set to start on Saturday, September 5.



The new season is expected to bring renewed attention to the state of domestic football, with clubs hoping for improved attendance, stronger commercial support and better infrastructure to help make the league more financially sustainable. Concerns over player welfare and club finances have become recurring issues in Ghanaian football, with stakeholders arguing that increasing revenue through sponsorship, broadcasting and matchday attendance will be key to improving conditions for players and clubs alike.
